COURSE INFORMATION

Topic: Biblical Interpretation

Course Description: How often have you sat in a Bible study and wondered if all the different comments about a biblical passage are on target? How do you even know? Many people recognize the value of the Bible but lack the tools to properly understand what the Bible actually says, means, and applies to our life today. The results can be disastrous! The focus of this course is how to read, interpret and apply the Bible. This class will equip students to discover the biblical author’s original intent, as well as how to apply it in relevant and legitimate ways today. We will cover everything from different Bible translations to different kinds of literature found in the Bible: poetry, narrative, prophecy, history, gospels, parables and wisdom.

Instructors:

Dr. Mark Mitchell, Executive Director, BASOM

Bernard is British but his parents were missionaries in Thailand for nearly 40 years. He originally came to the USA for one year, but has now been here for 35. He loves living in the Bay Area because all the world is here. After degrees in geography and land surveying he expected to climb mountains and make maps. Instead he went underground and measured particle accelerators at CERN (Geneva) and SLAC. A keen Bible student since 18 he started teaching at church, before doing a degree in Biblical Studies and joining the pastoral staff of Peninsula Bible Church Cupertino 27 years ago. He is committed to the idea of church-based Biblical and theological education.
